| Fame Fire Company 175th Anniversary | | | | Planning is underway to celebrate our birthday in 2013 by hosting the Pennsylvania State Fireman’s Convention and Parade. The last time the State Parade was in West Chester was 1963 for the Fame’s 125th anniversary so we thought it fitting we bring it back for the 175th. The State Parade should be a great way to get a big crowd to help us house the new Ladder 53.
Before we get to the details about the Parade, there will be many activities associated with the Convention the Thursday and Friday before the Parade that members may want to assist us with or join in. We will be running some ‘hands on’ training classes at the West Chester Fire Training Center for active firefighters. All of the West Chester fire companies will have open houses for the visiting conventioneers and our members. To assist people in getting around town we will be running a shuttle between the convention hotel, the firehouses, and a few stops in town near shopping and dining. We have had several members from the Fame attend the last few Conventions to get a feel for all that is involved and to see how we can make our event special. We have already signed up representatives for the 2011 Convention at Lake Harmony, and are getting the word out now to have a really good showing at the 2012 Convention in Norristown.
The selection process for becoming the host for the 2013 Convention and Parade included submitting letters of support from the Borough of West Chester, West Goshen Township, West Chester University, The West Chester Business Improvement District & Chamber of Commerce, and the Chester County Tourism Board. All were enthusiastic in their support, and we have been back in contact with all of them to let them know we were chosen and to set milestones for future meetings, approvals, etc. We have even signed up our first “Chief” level sponsor, so things are really moving forward.
Last, but not least, the Parade. We expect 300 units, including floats, antique cars, marching bands, and of course – fire trucks. The State offers $10,000 in prizes and the committee is working now to decide what other special awards we will offer to insure interesting and widespread participation.
Stay tuned for more updates – and see you at the Fame – September 25th – 28th 2013! More information can be found at our Website.
