| 2012 Western Division Playoff Preview | | | | The Western Division playoffs are set to begin with two best-of-three series starting on Sunday, July 8th. The regular season champions Baptist Church of West Chester (12-2) faces their nemesis Astra Foods/Network & Software Dev (8-6) in an intriguing matchup. The APSCUF Rams (10-4) are pitted against Comcast Spotlight (8-6) in the other semifinal series.
The first matchup in the Western Divison pits the teams with the two longest sponsor names in the league. Baptist Church of West Chester took control of the Western Division early on in their first season in the league and ran away with the division title. But the feel good story of the Western Division this season has been the emergence of Astra Foods/Network & Software Dev. Despite a carousel of sponsor names, Astra/N&S followed two last place seasons by making the playoffs for the first time in the Spring on the last day of the Western Division regular season And at 12-2, Baptist Church’s only two losses on the season both came at the hands of Astra/N&S. Baptist will be looking for revenge behind the highest scoring offense in the Western Division (17 RPG) led by Sam Parry (.744 AVG, 23 runs, 34 RBIs, 7 homers) and Stephanie Ottone (.725 AVG, 24 runs, 16 RBIs). Astra/N&S will counter with their big inning offense led by Dale Detterline (.806 AVG, 19 RBIs, 13 doubles) and Mark Shatz (.761 AVG, 26 runs) in what should be an excellent series.
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride, the APSCUF Rams reach the Western Division playoffs for the third consecutive year. APSCUF got bounced out of the playoffs by the eventual champion the past two years in tough fought series. APSCUF is looking to put a stamp on this season by making it to the finals for the first time. Kevin Flynn (.846 AVG, 17 RBIs) and Joe Navitsky (.708 AVG, 15 RBIs, 4 homers) power the offense for APSCUF. But the key to APSCUF’s success this season has been their defense, which gave up a league low 8 runs per game during the regular season. Comcast Spotlight, also in their third season in the league, is making their first entrance into the playoffs. It’s rare to see a group of IT guys and girls put up runs like Comcast has this year, scoring nearly 15 runs per game sans their pocket protectors. Despite their technological saavy, coach Kurt Simon does not seem to have mastered the stats portion of the website. Andrew James and Brian Magro seem to be the heavy lifters on the offensive end for the Spotlight.
Good luck to all teams in the Western Division playoffs.
